The incident between paparazzi and Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan has now led to a verbal exchange of blows about the recordings.

Prince Harry (38) and his wife Meghan (41) have apparently turned to the photo agency with a request, whose photographers said the couple had chased them through New York City. According to a report by the US gossip site “TMZ” the two demand the release of the image and video material of the incident from last Tuesday (May 16). They want to analyze the recordings and improve their own safety in this way, it is said.

A letter from the Sussexes’ lawyers is quoted as saying: “We hereby request that Backgrid [der Name der Bildagentur, Anm. d. Red.] promptly provided us with copies of any images, video and/or film taken by freelance photographers last night and for the seven hours thereafter after the couple left the event.” The Duchess was previously at the Women of Vision – Gala in New York City was honored with an award.

According to the report, the other side had already reacted to the demands and vehemently rejected them. A written reply reads: “In America, as I’m sure you know, property belongs to its owner. Third parties cannot simply demand that it be given to them, as kings might do.”

Another dig at Harry’s royal origins: The “royal privilege of requiring the people to cede their property to the Crown was long ago rejected in this country.” In addition, according to “TMZ”, the picture agency denies that there were any dangerous situations and “near collisions” at all.

This is how the Sussexes describe the incident

“Last night the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Mrs Ragland were involved in a near-fatal chase by a group of extremely aggressive paparazzi,” a spokesman for Prince Harry said on Wednesday. The relentless chase, which lasted over two hours, resulted in multiple near misses involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.

In a specially convened press conference Shortly thereafter, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (62) also commented and strongly condemned the behavior of the paparazzi. He found it hard to believe there was a two-hour high-speed chase, but even a 10-minute chase would be “extremely dangerous” in New York City because of the traffic, Adams said. He also recalled Princess Diana’s accidental death after fleeing photographers: “I don’t think there are many of us who can’t remember how his mother died.”
