Prince Daniel of Sweden speaks more openly than ever about his health and divorce rumors in a TV interview on his 50th birthday.

Prince Daniel of Sweden (49) has been suffering from a disease that affects his kidney function since birth. In 2009, Crown Princess Victoria’s husband (46) had his father’s kidney transplanted. In an interview, the royal now speaks more openly than ever about his health. On the occasion of his 50th birthday on September 15, Prince Daniel stood for the TV program “Prins Daniel 50 år” (Eng. “50 years of Prince Daniel”) by the Swedish journalist Carina Bergfeldt and answered questions.

He is “very grateful” that he has never had a setback since the transplant, Daniel explains to the journalist. Because the time before the operation was not easy for him, especially when he had to have dialysis. “It’s really bad for you there. But you need them to survive,” he says. Bergfeldt also wants to know from him whether he was close to death before the transplant – the prince vehemently denies this.

Prince Daniel: “It’s terrible not to be healthy”

Today all this is behind the former fitness trainer. He doesn’t even notice the foreign kidney. “But I take medicine every day to keep my kidneys healthy,” says Daniel. He was lucky, especially because his father was a potential donor. Because: “Many hundreds are queuing to get an organ.” Daniel knows exactly how it feels: “It’s terrible not to be healthy and to have to wait year in, year out for a donation. Some don’t survive the waiting.”

Breakup rumors were ‘nasty’ and ‘false’

Prince Daniel continues to express himself in the TV interview to separation rumors about him and Crown Princess Victoria that existed some time ago. The topic makes the royal visibly angry: “It was a bad, false rumor that we found out had serious consequences,” he scolds.

“Many friends from all over Sweden and also from abroad got in touch and the whole thing reached a level that we couldn’t accept,” continues Daniel. At the beginning of 2022 there was a rumor that the crown prince couple wanted to divorce. The Swedish royal family was forced to respond publicly and deny the rumor. Apparently with success: “I don’t think any sane person believes this rumor anymore.”
