Bundestag President Bas warns MPs against using Tiktok on company cell phones. She appeals to her colleagues: “Pay attention to the data!”.

After several governments banned the use of Tiktok on company cell phones, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas warned MPs to be careful.

“Tiktok is not installed on the cell phones of the Bundestag administration,” said the SPD politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “The MPs, on the other hand, are free to do so. I can only appeal here: Pay attention to the data! You have to be aware that the data may be misused.” Some of the servers are located abroad. “It’s not just the case with Tiktok, but also with Facebook or Instagram.”

However, Bas does not think it is right to withdraw from social media. “Many young voters only use social media to find out about politics. If we want to appeal to young people, we need social media.”

In countries like the US and Canada, government workers are being forced to delete the Chinese social media app Tiktok from their work devices over security concerns. Employees of the EU Commission should also not be allowed to use Tiktok on official cell phones.
