Premier League – Reactions to record holder Erling Haaland: “My thoughts are with Alan Shearer”

35 goals this season is a feat unmatched in Premier League history. Until Erling Haaland hit the island.

The Norwegian, who switched from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City in the summer, set a milestone in his first season in England.

In the 3-0 win against West Ham United, the clipper on duty scored for the 35th time – breaking the previous record (34) of the two former top scorers Andy Cole (Newcastle United, 1993/1994) and Alan Shearer (Blackburn Rovers, 1994/1995).

50 goals: England is amazed by “Freak” Haaland

UPDATE 01/05/2023 AT 1:38 PM

What makes Haaland’s performance even more impressive: Because the English upper house still comprised 22 teams up until the 1995/96 season, both Cole and Shearer played significantly more games than the 22-year-old City wonder boy. The 34 Cole goals were spread over 40 league duels, Shearer even played in all 42 games in his record season.

For comparison: Haaland only needed 31 Premier League appearances. With five games remaining, he has excellent chances of further increasing his goal tally.

It goes without saying that the number nine of the Skyblues was then celebrated for his fabulous numbers.

The reactions to the Haaland record.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City) on “Sky Sports”: “It’s a special night, a special moment for me. I’m just happy and proud. I spoke to Jack Grealish before the game – and he told me he’d like to give me the assist for the record goal ( whatever he did Note d. editor).

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City manager) on “Sky Sports”: “It’s incredible. He scores so many important goals, we’re very happy with him. He’s a unique person. He deserves all the praise because it’s an incredible milestone. One day he might break his own record!”

Guardiola on “BBC Sport”: “He’s only 22 and has five games left. I’ve also sometimes substituted him after 60 minutes because he’s already scored a hat-trick. He probably would have scored more goals otherwise. I can only congratulate him.”

Nathan Aké (Manchester City) on “Sky Sports”: “It’s crazy. He delivers every day. He deserves all this because he works very hard. Hopefully he can score a lot more goals.”

Micah Richards (Ex-City Pro) on “Sky Sports”: “Honestly, Erling Haaland is absolutely incredible. This is his debut season in the Premier League – what he’s done is stunning. I expected him to score a lot of goals but I never expected that.”

Gary Lineker (English football legend) on Twitter: “Premier League record for Erling Haaland. 35 goals. That’s crazy. My thoughts are with Alan Shearer these minutes.”

Alan Shearer (Previous record holder) reacting to Lineker’s post on Twitter: “I couldn’t have asked for a nicer guy to succeed me. It’s taken 28 years! He’s the best.”
