Disturbance of the peace, bodily harm and a total of more than 550 operations: The Munich police took stock after the first New Year’s Eve without corona restrictions. As expected, the emergency services experienced a “busy” night, as the police announced at 5:18 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
According to the report, police officers in the city drove up to five in the morning on typical New Year’s Eve missions, according to the report there were 56 disturbances, 28 assault offenses, more than 50 missions for pyrotechnics and 37 missions in connection with fires. At the turn of the year 2022, the city’s alcohol ban had been expanded, the sale of rockets was banned and there were restrictions on public and private gatherings.
According to police reports, around 20,000 people met around midnight in the area around Marienplatz and the pedestrian zone to welcome in the New Year. There was a complete ban on fireworks from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. (general decree of the state capital), which was repeatedly pointed out to the revelers with loudspeaker announcements. Seven people were nevertheless reported by the police for violating the general decree. Around 4,000 people celebrated at the Friedensengel, Europaplatz and the adjacent parks.
Many animals were also stressed by the banging. Already in the afternoon and in the course of the evening, the emergency call received around ten calls from pet owners whose dogs (including a cat in one case) had run away frightened by firecrackers.
