Police report more than 1,500 arrests during climate protests in The Hague

Police in The Hague arrested more than 1,500 people during protests. The climate activists had blocked part of a highway. The group called “Extinction Rebellion”.

According to their own statements, the Dutch police arrested more than 1,500 people at a demonstration by climate activists in The Hague. Police said they used water cannons to disperse Extinction Rebellion activists who blocked a major thoroughfare in the city.

A total of 1,579 people were arrested, 40 of whom are to be prosecuted.

For the seventh time, the activists had blocked a section of the A12 motorway near the Dutch parliament and government seat. The city administration of The Hague had previously warned the demonstrators that blocking the expressway was prohibited. With the action, the group “Extinction Rebellion” said they wanted to protest against the government’s energy policy.
