A man is shot and a suspect is caught in a Swedish shopping center. An eyewitness reports: “I had my coffee in my hand when I heard people shouting: Run, run!”

A man was injured by gunfire in a Swedish shopping center. The building in Kungsbacka was evacuated in the afternoon, the Swedish news agency TT reported. One person was arrested. The Police are investigating attempted manslaughter or murder.

Investigators were alerted around 3 p.m. after several callers reported loud banging noises. “I had my coffee in my hand when I heard people shouting: Run, run!” an eyewitness told Swedish radio station SVT.

Suspect caught at crime scene

According to Swedish Radio, the suspect was caught at the scene by security guards. It is still unclear whether the person acted alone. The crime scene has been cordoned off and is being investigated by the police. Footage on social media showed police officers taking a person away.

The condition of the injured person is unclear, police in western Sweden said. Nothing is known yet about the background to the crime. The town of Kungsbacka is located in the southwest of Sweden, near Gothenburg.

Sweden has been struggling for a long time with criminal gangs, which are involved in conflicts in numerous places in the country and are sometimes extremely violent. Shots are fired again and again. It remained unclear until the evening whether the incident in the shopping center was also related to gang crime.
