Police ensure microwave safe – Bavaria

The Maisach fire brigade went twice to the same location in a Maisach old people’s home on Saturday. The Olching police explained the operations: On Saturday morning, an 80-year-old resident of the Essen home warmed up in a steel pot in a microwave oven. Even when sparks flew in the cooking chamber and the pot’s plastic handles melted, he didn’t stop the appliance. Smoke gases triggered the fire alarm system and shortly thereafter the Maisach fire brigade was at the door.

The head of the fire brigade tried to explain to the old man that no metal pots and other metal objects should be heated in a microwave. However, the old man had shown himself to be unteachable and pointed out that there was nothing about this in the instructions for use. It happened as it had to: In the afternoon, the men and women of the volunteer fire brigade went to the same old people’s home again. The reason for the alarm was the same, whereupon the police quickly secured the microwave. “To avert danger,” as she explains. However, this cooking attempt did not go so smoothly for the resident, who was taken to a hospital by the emergency services as a precaution because there was suspicion of smoke poisoning.
