Poland’s parliament confirms Donald Tusk’s new government. The 66-year-old won a vote of confidence in parliament that evening. He and his cabinet received 248 out of 449 votes, while 201 members of the Sejm voted against it. The vote on the pro-European coalition government, originally planned for the afternoon, had been postponed several times because more than 250 MPs had raised questions.

In his government statement, Tusk announced a fundamental change in his country’s European policy. Poland must become a leader in the EU through good cooperation, he said. He also emphasized that Poland would work within the EU and NATO to provide further support for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.

The former EU Council President and previous opposition leader received the order from Parliament to form a government on Monday. He is to be sworn in as the new Prime Minister on Wednesday and then travel to the EU summit in Brussels as head of government.
