It is a unique project that started a few weeks ago: The will be for three years star and Welthungerhilfe are looking for solutions to hunger together with the people of a village in Kenya, always in close cooperation with founders of the young start-up scene in Nairobi. “Kinakoni – a village against hunger” is the name of the action that gave rise to a special episode of the star-Podcasts “The Boss” there. Host Simone Menne talks to Susanne Fotiadis from the board of Welthungerhilfe about Kinakoni – and also about the special features of a career in an NGO (non-governmental organization).

“Everyone feels every day that their work is making a contribution to something big or important. This knowledge is incredibly motivating,” says Fotiadis of her everyday job. She herself worked in the consumer goods industry for years before she made a conscious decision to switch to a profession with a social focus. “An NGO also attracts other people. You don’t often find people with a strong ego here. I find that very pleasant,” she says. Simone Menne speaks to Fotiadis, who is responsible for marketing and communication at Welthungerhilfe, about the common image of aid organizations, which is often criticized: Whites are portrayed as rescuers, blacks as those to be rescued. White Saviourism is the name of the criticism of this power relationship.

Work in Africa: “Eye level is very important to me”

“The climate crisis was mainly caused by the global north and the global south has to suffer much, much more. There is simply an injustice in the world and so I believe that help here is entirely justified. But on an equal footing and that is for It is very important to me that we don’t come and think we know better, “says Susanne Fotiadis. In this podcast episode she also talks to Simone Menne about which career tip she likes to pass on and why she recommends it to women in particular to work in an NGO.
