Playstation 5: Sony reveals accessible controller kit name and details

Access Controller is the name of the accessible controller kit for the Playstation 5 that Sony has been working on for some time. After the kit was presented at CES 2023 under the name Project Leonardo, Sony now gave it announced the official product name and other details in a blog post. The occasion is today’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day, which draws attention to digital inclusion and access for people with disabilities. With the freely configurable controller, Sony promises to make the Playstation gaming experience more inclusive.

Thanks to the good configurability of the buttons and the analog joystick, the Access Controller should adapt to the individual needs of disabled people in order to give them a better and barrier-free gaming experience.

According to Sony, the controller contains:

  • Analog stick caps (standard stick caps, tall stick caps and ball stick cap)
    Keycaps:
  • Pillow button caps
  • Flat button caps
  • Wide flat button cap (to cover two key bases)
  • Overhang button caps (optimized for players with smaller hands)
  • Curve button caps (which can be pushed or pulled depending on whether they are top or bottom mounted)
  • Interchangeable keycap labels, in which the respective keys can be labeled with individual functions

The controller can therefore be individually configured on the kit and via the settings of the PS5 and adapted to different needs. It also has four 3.5 mm AUX ports to which additional special keys or sticks can be attached.

According to Sony, up to two access controllers can also be connected to a conventional DualSense controller to form a network: All three then form a virtual controller and can be used together. In addition, the sensitivity of the analog sticks can be adjusted.

The settings can be saved in profiles via the software in order to be able to provide different configurations for specific game situations. A toggle mode also allows keys to be permanently activated with one press without pressing them permanently, similar to the caps lock key. Price and release date have not yet been mentioned in the blog entry. Instead, Sony announced more product and release details for the accessible controller over the next few months.
