Britain has accused Russia of wanting to install a pro-Russian leadership in Ukraine. There are intensive secret service contacts with former Ukrainian politicians. Moscow dismissed the accusation as “disinformation”.

The British government has accused Russia of wanting to install a pro-Russian leadership in Ukraine. Russian intelligence officials are already in contact with former Ukrainian politicians who could take the helm while the Russian leadership is “considering whether to invade and occupy Ukraine,” according to a statement released by the ministry late Sunday night. However, the ministry declined to provide evidence to support the allegations.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned Russia not to go ahead with such plans: “We will not tolerate the Kremlin’s plot to install a pro-Russian leadership in Ukraine,” she wrote on Twitter.

Possible candidate is on the Russian sanctions list

The British Foreign Office has named several people who could take power in the event of a Russian invasion of Kiev, including former Ukrainian MP Yevgeny Murayev. However, he himself has been on a Russian sanctions list since 2018.

In an initial statement to the Observer newspaper, Murayev said the British Foreign Office seemed confused. “It’s not very logical. I’m banned from Russia. Not only that, my father’s company money was confiscated.”

Moscow: London spreads “disinformation”

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected the British accusation as targeted misinformation. The “disinformation” spread by the British Foreign Office is “another sign that it is the NATO members led by the Anglo-Saxon nations who are escalating tensions over Ukraine,” the ministry said on Twitter. “We call on the State Department to stop the spread of nonsense,” it said.

Washington concerned

The news from London was received with concern in the US. “This type of conspiracy is deeply disturbing,” the White House said. “The Ukrainian people have the sovereign right to determine their own future.”

A week ago, the United States had alleged that Russia’s own agents were planning a special operation in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin rejected this and demanded proof.
