A few months before the parliamentary elections, something is happening in terms of personnel: Jaroslaw Kaczynski is returning to the Polish government.

Poland’s strongman Jaroslaw Kaczynski is now officially back in the government. The leader of the national conservative Law and Justice party (PiS) was appointed deputy prime minister by President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw, the PAP news agency reported.

There had been speculation about this for a long time. Mateusz Morawiecki (also PiS) remains prime minister.

Who is Kaczynski?

The 74-year-old Kaczynski is considered the real strongman in Polish politics. He also held the post of Vice Prime Minister from 2020 to June 2022. Kaczynski is now the only deputy head of government.

Prior to his appointment, Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak and three other deputies had resigned from their additional posts. They will retain their posts as ministers.

The next parliamentary elections will take place in the EU and NATO country in autumn. The exact date is not fixed yet. According to polls, the PiS has a good chance of winning the election again. It is in constant dispute with the EU Commission, mainly because of the restructuring of the judiciary. However, the latter made a name for itself as a supporter of neighboring Ukraine, which has been fighting a Russian war of aggression for almost 16 months.
