Together with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Munich public utility company, the Hans Sauer Foundation and the UnternehmerTUM start-up center, the city is launching two pilot projects to redesign public space. The goals: With regard to climate change, car traffic should be reduced on the one hand; this is only possible if many Munich residents switch from their own car to alternative offers. On the other hand, according to the idea of the project, the quality of life in the city should improve if people have more green areas and more free space on their doorstep.
Whether and how this really works is to be researched thoroughly over a period of several months. The project group selected three street areas in the southern floodplain around Kolumbusstrasse and Schlotthauerstrasse and Landlstrasse in Obergiesing as test areas. The name of the project: “MCube aqt”.
The public rooms will be equipped with raised beds and seating furniture, among other things. New mobility points will also be set up. In the future, so-called shared mobility offers will be available there, such as e-scooters, bicycles and car-sharing cars. In combination with local public transport, the mobility points should enable mobility without your own vehicle – they will remain in place permanently.
In concrete terms, this is how it works: In the parking license area “Südliche Au”, several raised beds with trees and space for gardening as well as installations for sitting, talking and relaxing are currently being set up. Four parking spaces on Kolumbusstraße will be used temporarily for this purpose. At the corner of Schlotthauerstrasse and Entenbachstrasse, the greening will be expanded.
From June 10th, Kolumbusstraße between the junction with Entenbachstraße and Sommerstraße will be temporarily closed to traffic in one area and temporarily closed in another area. According to the mobility department, “room for neighborly encounters, games and fun” should be created.
At the intersection of Schlotthauerstrasse, Sommerstrasse, Kolumbusstrasse and Asamstrasse, a new neighborhood square will also be created, which will be equipped with planters with trees and seating and will invite people to linger. From June 15, mobility points will be set up on Kolumbusstraße, Schlotthauerstraße and Falkenstraße, and a street festival is planned for June 17.
It’s similar on Landlstraße: Here, too, several raised beds with trees and seating are set up on the area of four parking spaces. Mobility points will be set up in Kesselbergstrasse and Untersbergstrasse from mid-June. From July 4th, part of the Landlstraße will be temporarily closed to cars.
The streets and squares remain accessible for the fire brigade, rescue and nursing services and waste disposal. Residents can sponsor raised beds and trees or bring in their own ideas for using the traffic-calmed areas. Interested parties can contact [email protected]. In addition, workshops on the subject of “Futures of Mobility” are planned in both areas, as well as consultation hours for residents every two weeks.
The researchers accompany the project throughout its duration, conduct surveys and document the results. The traffic calming will be lifted at the end of October.
