Pierre Sage drops his three-man defense and launches four offensive players… Follow Lyon’s return to the Europa League with us…

As much as we had guessed the typical defense of OL, with Mata in place of the still injured Niakhaté, we had not seen the combined tenures of Rayan Cherki and Ernest Nuamah coming. It smells like 4-2-3-1 this evening with Cherki supporting Lacazette, Nuamah on the right wing and Malick Fofana on the left, finally rewarded for being OL’s best offensive player since the start of the season. Pierre Sage has a slight choice on the bench, with… 12 possible replacements in the European Cup!

We were interested in the very strong draw in the Europa League for OL… and the French authorities, due to the large ultra groups accompanying Olympiakos but also Besiktas and Eintracht Frankfurt.

And then we come back to the slap suffered by OL on Sunday during the Olympico, the kind of match that can (already) leave its mark on a season.

OL are (finally) back on the European scene and all of Lyon is hoping to thrill, and still be part of the Europa League adventure in the spring. For this to happen, Pierre Sage’s players would need to get their season off the ground for good, hitherto stuck at 4 points out of 15 in Ligue 1, with the added bonus of a major fiasco on Sunday against OM (2-3). We will quickly see this Thursday if the attack of this C3 does any good to a really tough group.

There will be a real customer in front since Olympiakos won the 2024 Europa Conference League, the first European coronation in the history of the Greek club. Parc OL should unfortunately ring hollow, with around 25,000 spectators expected, due to a partial closed session depriving Lyon of its two corners. The fault lies in excesses, sanctioned by UEFA, which followed OL’s last European match against West Ham. Did you skip that? No wonder, it was April 2022…

>> We meet for the pre-match from 8:30 p.m., before kick-off at 9 p.m.
