Philipp Kohlhöfer: It’s easier to get used to rockets than to a power failure

Philipp Kohlhöfer spent almost the entire December in the Ukraine for the arte documentary “Culture War – Art as a Weapon”. The documentary filmmaker describes what he experienced during that time and how difficult it was to process it.

When the light goes out without warning, that doesn’t matter. Nobody raises their voices, nobody complains and nobody asks how long it will stay dark. Cell phone lights are switched on, power banks are placed on the table, candles are brought. People stay seated over the beer and because it will soon be cold in the bar, which is said to have the best beer in Lviv, some are already putting on their jackets. Unfortunately, says one of the bartenders, from now on there will only be snacks and no warm food, and everyone understands.
