At least 900 pigs died in a fire in a barn in Lower Bavaria and millions of euros in damage were caused. The cause of the fire was initially unclear, a police spokeswoman said on Sunday.
The barn in Pfeffenhausen (Landshut district) was already completely ablaze when emergency services arrived on Saturday evening. The fire department was unable to prevent the fire from spreading to a pigsty. As the spokeswoman said, all the animals in this building were buried due to the collapse of the roof. Another neighboring stable with several hundred pigs was reportedly saved from the flames. “Two veterinarians were on site to check the welfare of these rescued pigs,” said the police spokeswoman. No people were injured in the fire.
