Peter Weibel, the director of the ZKM, is dead – culture

Till Briegleb

It was never easy to really have a balanced conversation with Peter Weibel. He already had an association with every half-sentence that his counterpart uttered. The director of the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) simply knew too much. And he never lost the youthful impatience to have to apply this knowledge immediately. What in the international field of cultural discourses, which Weibel helped to shape as a curator, theoretician and tireless instigator for decades, could sometimes become acoustic hard work for all listeners due to his broad femininity. For while his German was massively deformed by the Austrian accent, his quick way of speaking in English presented a listening task that did not allow for any distraction. But it was worth listening. Because Weibel always thought originally.
