Peru: Freezer falls on rescuers on duty

In action after a landslide, the improbable happened to this Peruvian rescue worker in Lima on Wednesday: he was hit by a freezer – which led to audible bewilderment among observers of the accident. Joao Loyala had descended on a rope into the bed of the Rimac River in search of two missing persons. On the way up he was caught by the freezer falling from a destroyed house. His colleagues pulled him up unconscious. He survived and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His colleague reports: Jose Rivas, rescue worker: “Of the three people who had descended, he was the last to get back up. Halfway up the freezer then fell. Thank God he was only hit on the side, so he suffered no serious injuries .” A landslide had previously caused several houses to collapse. It was not immediately known how many people died. The authorities ordered the evacuation of all houses in the area due to the risk of another landslide. The local police urged the population to be careful and criticized the authorities. The building regulations are not strict enough.
