The Berlin Court of Appeal has convicted a 56-year-old man for acting as a secret service agent: In 2017, the man passed a CD with more than 300 files on the Bundestag building to the Russian secret service.
In the process of submitting floor plans from the Bundestag to the Russian military secret service GRU, the accused was sentenced to a suspended sentence. The Berlin Court of Appeal saw it as proven that 56-year-old Jens F. from Potsdam had disclosed sensitive data about the Bundestag building and imposed a two-year suspended prison sentence for “secret service agent activity”.
The public prosecutor had demanded two years and nine months in prison, the defense had pleaded for acquittal. The defendant had refused an understanding offered by the court in advance of the proceedings – in return for a confession.
The accused remained silent during the trial
According to the indictment, in 2017 the former employee of a security company working for parliament handed over a CD-ROM with more than 385 floor plan files of the properties used by the Bundestag to a secret service employee in the Russian embassy in Berlin.
The company had therefore been entrusted with the legally required inspections of electrical devices in the premises of the Bundestag. Therefore, the man also had access to PDF files with the corresponding floor plans. The accused himself was silent during the trial.
