In 2021 there had been a long power struggle between Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder for the Union’s chancellor candidacy. The former Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia warns: This must not be repeated.

The former CDU leader, party leader and candidate for Chancellor of the Union, Armin Laschet, has called for a new procedure to determine the Union’s next candidate for Chancellor. Laschet told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”: “It is necessary for the Union to develop a new procedure for how it wants to select its candidate for chancellor in the future. The procedure that two party leaders meet and discuss it with each other is obviously wrong.”

In 2021 there had been a long power struggle between Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder for the Union’s chancellor candidacy. The Bavarian Prime Minister finally lost to Laschet, who failed in the federal election. The CDU subsequently accused Söder of having weakened the joint chancellor candidate Laschet with public statements.

“The situation from 2021 could occur again, so it is wise to agree on a path well before the next federal election,” says Laschet now. “We have all made up our minds in the Union that 2021 must not be repeated,” he added.
