Paralympics – German team in seventh place – Sport

Paralympics, German team: The German team came seventh in the medal table at the Winter Paralympics in Beijing. With four gold medals, eight silver medals and seven bronze medals, the team, which is in the midst of upheaval, was quite surprised. With a total of 19 medals, the athletes from Germany equaled the number of podium places in Pyeongchang four years ago. The most successful German athlete was Anna-Lena Forster. The monoskier won two gold and two silver medals. Linn Kazmeier (cross-country skiing), who is only 15 years old, and Leonie Walter (biathlon), who is three years older, also won gold. China (18/20/23) won the medal table by a clear margin, followed by Ukraine (11/10/8) and Canada (8/6/11).

Paralympics, Ukraine: The Ukrainian athletes will probably fly home after the Paralympics, but will not return to their apartments and houses. “They know that they cannot go into the war zones,” reported President Friedhelm Julius Beucher of the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) to the German Press Agency: “They will probably first go together to accommodation in another part of the country. Of course it will change many things every day. But my colleague in the presidency said to me: That’s probably our way.”

After that we’ll see how it goes. “We definitely want to help and will find the best possible way to do so,” promised Beucher: “It’s about cars, about living space, everything is in flux.” In addition, there have already been offers, such as from the parents of record Paralympic champion Verena Bentele, to take in athletes. “The French team management offered the Ukrainians to come to France with the whole team,” said Beucher: “But many of them want to stay in Ukraine. Of course, you have to see to what extent that’s possible.”

Tennis: Completely upset by an insulting interjection, the Japanese Naomi Osaka was eliminated in the second round of the WTA tournament in Indian Wells. The four-time Grand Slam winner shed tears during and after the 6-0, 6-4 loss to Weronika Kudermetova (Russia/No. 21). “Naomi, you suck” (Naomi, you’re annoying), it sounded in the first sentence from the ranks. The 2018 tournament winner complained visibly emotionally to the referee.

After the match, Osaka said the comment brought back memories of the scandal at the prestigious competition in California in 2001, when Serena and Venus Williams were booed. Father Richard Williams had spoken of racist insults at the time.

“To be honest, I feel like it hasn’t really hit me when I’ve been disturbed. But here? I saw a video where Venus and Serena were booed here,” the crying Osaka said in the interview on the court. “I don’t know why, but it stuck in my head and was repeated many times.” The former world number one, who speaks openly about her problems with depression, is committed to more consideration for the mental health of athletes.

Biathlon, World Cup: Biathlon Olympic champion Denise Herrmann underlined her impressive form. The 33-year-old finished second in the mass start over 12.5 in Otepää/Estonia for the fourth time this winter in the World Cup. Franziska Preuss in fifth place and Vanessa Voigt in sixth place rounded off a strong result for the German Ski Association (DSV) team. After two misses, Herrmann was only narrowly beaten by the Swede Elvira Öberg (one miss). She was 4.5 seconds back. Third was Marte Olsbu Röiseland from Norway(1/+4.8).

Preuss missed the second World Cup win of her career with one penalty on the last standing (+8.1). For the 28-year-old, it was a sense of achievement after a messed-up season. Voigt, who finished second in the sprint on Friday for the first time, shot clean again. You missed Öberg by 13.8 seconds. On Sunday, the mixed (12.30 p.m./ARD and Eurosport) and the single mixed relay (3.15 p.m.) will take place in Otepää. The World Cup finals will take place at Holmenkollen in Oslo from March 17th to 20th.

Ski flying, World Cup: Olympic champion Marius Lindvik has won the title of ski flying world champion. The 23-year-old Norwegian flew 232.5, 226.5, 230 and 224.5 meters in Vikersund and won the gold medal on Saturday ahead of Slovenian Timi Zajc and world record holder Stefan Kraft from Austria. The German defending champion Karl Geiger fell well short of the high expectations and finished eighth after a weak first day. Severin Freund (12th), Andreas Wellinger (14th), Constantin Schmid (17th) and the disappointing Markus Eisenbichler (18th place) also had nothing to do with the medal ranks. On Sunday (4.30 p.m. / ARD) the team competition awaits. Germany has issued a medal as a goal, the favorites for gold are Norway and Slovenia. Kraft’s world record of 253.5 meters from 2017 remained untouched on the third day of flying in Vikersund.

2nd league, results: FC St. Pauli missed the return to the top of the table in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hamburgers did not get more than 1: 1 (1: 1) at Dynamo Dresden on Saturday and thus did not use the slip from Darmstadt 98. The lilies also only drew (1:1) at SV Sandhausen on Friday evening. However, St. Pauli was unlucky with four aluminum goals. Darmstadt and St. Pauli are now level on points (48), but the previous leaders Werder Bremen are also third in this haul – and will still play at 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday evening (8.30 p.m. / Sky and Sport1). Werder could be the big winner of the 26th match day in this trio.

In Dresden, Christoph Daferner (20′) gave Dynamo the lead in front of 16,000 fans, Simon Makienok (42′) equalized before the break. The hosts were more dangerous, especially in the first half, and could have led higher. But then St. Pauli’s pressure increased, the attempts by Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (54′), Adam Dzwigala (57′), Eric Smith (84′) and Igor Matanovic (89′) landed on the post and crossbar.

3rd league, results: Table leaders 1. FC Magdeburg suffered a defeat for the first time in 15 games in the 3rd football league. The 1974 European Cup Winners’ Cup surprisingly lost 1-2 (0-1) to bottom Türkgücü Munich. On the other hand, 1. FC Kaiserslautern secured second place with a 3-0 (1-0) win over newly promoted TSV Havelse and reduced the gap to nine points. 1. FC Saarbrücken moved up to third place with a 2-0 (1-0) win in the top game at Eintracht Braunschweig. The Saarlanders passed the Lower Saxony with the three.

Philip Türpitz (13th) scored the opening goal for Türkgücü, Alexander Sorge (84th) removed the last doubts about the surprise victory. Kai Brünker (89th) only managed the connecting goal. The Red Devils from Betzenberg brought Terrence Boyd (11th) in front, Philipp Hercher (53rd) and Marlon Ritter (73rd) scored the other goals. Manuel Zeitz (37th) and Justin Steinkötter (89th) were successful for FCS. SC Verl lost to Waldhof Mannheim 1:3 (1:0). Viktoria Köln beat SV Wehen Wiesbaden 2-1 (0-0) with a brace from Youssef Amyn (68’/90′). Wiesbaden’s Sebastian Mrowca saw the red card for gross foul play (28th). On Friday, 1860 Munich won 2-0 (2-0) at Viktoria Berlin.

Slalom, World Cup: Ski racer Lena Dürr missed out on a podium finish in the Are slalom world cup despite an optimal starting position. After the 30-year-old from Munich was still in the lead by 0.08 seconds after the first round on Saturday, it was only enough for fifth place in the end. The gap to winner Katharina Liensberger from Austria was 0.34 seconds. Mina Fürst Holtmann from Norway (+0.16) came second, followed by Michelle Gisin (+0.23) from Switzerland. In Emma Aicher and Jessica Hilzinger, the two other DSV starters completed the nevertheless good overall result from a German point of view. 18-year-old Aicher finished 18th in her native country. Hilzinger finished 21st.
