Packages by tram – car & mobile

Deutsche Post has started a pilot project for parcel delivery by tram in Schwerin. In cooperation with the city of Schwerin and the local transport company NVS, the company wants to transport around 450 parcels to parcel stations at the stops once a day with a special line, as the post office announced. Those involved hope to save emissions and reduce traffic in the city center.

According to the company, this is a first, although there is a similar project with a solar boat in Berlin. Schwerin’s Lord Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD) is hoping for a signal effect: “With this project we are gaining experience that can be of great importance for many other municipalities.” A few years ago, Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) tested a climate-friendly delivery method using logistics trams and cargo bikes with the parcel delivery company Hermes, among others.

“A wonderful project. The parcel railway in Schwerin makes it possible to experience what we work hard for and what we firmly believe in: maximum green, sustainable and innovative logistics and services of general interest for the people in the region,” said Wilfried Schumann, branch manager of the Deutsche Post DHL Group. Mecklenburg-West Pomerania’s Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) welcomed the project: “Climate protection is one of the most important tasks for the future. Mecklenburg-West Pomerania should be climate-neutral by 2040 at the latest. Every single step counts on this path in order to achieve the goal.”
