Queen Margrethe II (82) of Denmark celebrated her jubilee more modestly than originally planned – out of respect for Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022), who died on September 8th. The two queens were third cousins. After the death of the British monarch, Margrethe II is now the longest reigning monarch in Europe.

The decision to make the celebrations for her anniversary smaller is said to have been made by the 82-year-old herself, as reported by the Danish media. A celebratory carriage ride through the streets of Copenhagen, a big balcony performance with the family and street parties have reportedly been cancelled. According to media reports, a gala performance in the Royal Theater took place “in an adapted form”.

Mourning the Queen

Queen Margrethe II wrote after the death of the British Queen to King Charles III. (73) that she was “deeply moved by the sad news of the death of your beloved mother, I send you and Camilla my heartfelt thoughts and prayers”. It continued: “Your mother was very important to me and my family. She was a towering figure among European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all.”

Members of the Swedish and Norwegian royal families attended events marking Margrethe’s anniversary over the weekend, which included a church service in Copenhagen and a dinner at Christiansborg Palace.

The celebrations for the jubilee were supposedly scheduled for the beginning of the year, but were already planned to be smaller due to the corona pandemic. Margrethe II was crowned Queen on January 14, 1972 at the age of 31. She is considered to be extremely popular with the people, scandal-free and apolitical. The fun-loving monarch is also known as an artist.

The Danish Queen has repeatedly stated that she wants to remain on the throne until her death. Her son, Crown Prince Frederik (54), is to succeed her.
