Otherness as enrichment: Ismail Sahin, pioneer of intercultural youth work – Munich

A farm boy from Terme in northern Turkey becomes a pioneer: political scientist Ismail Sahin has been working for 40 years with young people who have to find their own way between the culture of their parents and that of Germany.

Not so long ago, Ismail Sahin was asked for a small newspaper’s questionnaire about the most important piece of advice he could give his children: “Don’t let them stop you from thinking” is the second to last answer on the list. Strictly speaking, the 65-year-old has no children at all, at least not biological ones. To be more precise, he has had hundreds of children over the last 40 years.
