One of the largest yachts in the world: Scheich receives “Blue”.

Lürssen ship delivered
One refueling costs 500,000 US dollars: Scheich takes delivery of the 600 million dollar yacht “Blue”.

His gem is one of the longest in the world: the mega yacht “Blue” (IMO 9862231) by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan measures 160 meters. In the ranking according to gross register tons, the “Blue” even secured a place on the podium of the “most voluminous yachts” in the world.

The Weser has lost a landmark: Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has picked up his new mega yacht “Blue”. The ship is a prime example of unbridled luxury – and cost a fortune.

Arabian Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is no stranger to the international yacht scene. With his first ship, the “Topaz”, the billionaire secured a position among the ten largest yachts in the world. The “Blue” goes one better – but still it’s not enough for first place.

Builder Lürssen proudly announces on his website: “After the successful second sea trial of the “Blue” at the end of June, the 160 meter long Lürssen yacht left the shipyard in Bremen on July 2nd and embarked on her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean Sea, where she is now celebrating her first season will spend with their new owners.”

Not the biggest, not the longest – but a giant

If you look at the pure key data of the “Blue”, many an oligarch will turn green with envy. The ship measures 160 meters and is one of the “most voluminous yachts” in the world with 15,320 gross register tons. Only Alisher Usmanov’s “Dilbar” and Omani Sultan Haitham ibn Tariq’s “Al Said” are larger.

Information on the characteristics of the ship is still scarce, since the delivery took place only recently and the Lürssen shipyard is extremely closed to the public. The industry magazine “Superyachtfan” writes that the “Blue” offers space for 48 guests in 24 rooms and that the crew includes around 80 people who are accommodated in 40 cabins.

The few pictures of the yacht show that the ship has two landing pads for helicopters. Terence Disdale is said to be responsible for the design – both outside and inside. Disdale has worked on yachts since 1973 and has also worked on Roman Abramovich’s “Eclipse”, Paul Allen’s “Tatoosh” and Sultan ibn Abd al-Aziz Al Saud’s “Al Salamah”.

Refuel once for $500,000

According to various reports, the “Blue” is said to have cost over 600 million US dollars. The annual operating costs for such ships are estimated at around ten percent of the purchase price. The Spanish sports newspaper “Marca” writes that just refueling the yacht of the Manchester City owner costs 500,000 US dollars. This report also contains further information about the ship, for example that the “Blue” houses a swimming pool, a gym and various restaurants. None of this would come as a surprise – on yachts of this size these features are standard equipment.

Builder Lürssen is particularly proud of the drive. The “Blue” sails the seas with a diesel-electric hybrid drive concept developed by Lürssen. It contains two diesel engines with individual gears, which can also be driven with purely electric power when driving slowly. A modern exhaust aftertreatment system should also reduce nitrogen oxide levels and generate less noise and vibration.

One family, three huge ships

Owner Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is a member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family and Minister of Presidential Affairs for his brother, President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He has owned Manchester City football club since 2009.

The “Blue” is reportedly replacing his old yacht “Topaz”, which henceforth sails under the name “A+”. The Sheikh is said to have given the yacht away to the controversial Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud, allegedly as part of a deal for the Da Vinci painting “Salvator Mundi”. The “Topaz” was, among other things, the holiday home of the self-proclaimed environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio.

With the “Blue”, the ruling family of Abu Dhabi is consolidating its place among the richest yacht aficionados in the world. The longest yacht in the world, the “Azzam” has belonged to the family since 2013 – his brother President Chalifa bin Zayid Al Nahyan calls it his own. Another brother, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayid Al Nahyan, also appears to have ordered a new yacht.
