A coach had an accident in Croatia, which, according to the police, was on its way from Germany to Kosovo. Ten people were killed and 45 injured. The driver is said to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

At least ten people were killed and 45 others were injured in a bus accident in Slavonski Brod, Croatia. This is reported by the Croatian media, citing the police.

According to the information, the bus with a Kosovar license plate came off the lane of the highway at Slavonski Brod around 6 a.m. in the morning. The bus was on the way from Germany to Pristina, according to the police. As reported by the portal “24.sata.hr”, the bus was on behalf of a travel agency that regularly organizes trips from Germany to Kosovo and Albania.

Driver apparently fell asleep

So far, there is little information about the cause of the accident in the place on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The AP news agency reports, citing the police, that the driver of the bus was arrested after losing control of the vehicle. According to Deputy Prosecutor Slavko Pranjic, he testified that he “fell asleep for a moment”.

The police also said that the bus was fully occupied with 67 people, including two drivers and, according to Health Minister Vili Baros, 15 minors. One of the drivers was among the dead.

Local police chief Franjo Galic said the accident was “one of the worst I’ve ever seen”. The 45 injured were taken to a hospital in Slavonski Brod. Eight of them were seriously injured, said hospital director Josip Samardzic.

“Hope the injured recover”

The Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic condoled the relatives and the Kosovar people. “We hope the injured will recover,” he wrote on Twitter. Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani expressed her condolences on Facebook and Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti said: “This is a tragic day for our country and our people.”
