On the Death of British Novelist Martin Amis – Culture

British novelist Martin Amis, inventor of salacious caricatures of disabled, cynical figures in decline, has died.

In a 2004 review of Diego Maradona’s autobiography El Diego, Martin Amis wrote of the former super-forward: “Inside every fat man, they say, there’s a skinny man trying to get out. In Maradona’s case, it seems like he’s trying fatter man to come in.” A typical American bon mot: funny, sharply observed, unfriendly. It is the tone of the “new unpleasantness”, the tone of a literary elite in London, in whose inner circle Amis moved as a novelist and among whose most dazzling figures he belonged.
