Olympic Games photographer: Karsten de Riese – Munich

Karsten de Riese was the photographer of the Olympic Games in Munich, he took pictures of the German border, portrayed Theodor Adorno, Karl Jaspers and Willy Brandt. Only Helmut Kohl threw him out of the plenary hall once.

His archive comprises around 390,000 recordings and is a treasure trove of images in contemporary German history. Karsten de Riese, 79, photographed Theodor Adorno in the Siemens studio for electronic music in Munich, went for a walk with Willy Brandt on the beach in Algeria, illuminated the Bonn parliament, the 1972 Olympic Games and time and again important industrial developments. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has now acquired the entire inventory and will digitize it. The photographer welcomes us for a chat in his house in Dietramszell with home-baked apple pie. Then he flips through the pictures that mean the most to him.
