The German team didn’t get an optimal start into the second Olympia-Half. The Alpine blunders in the giant slalom, in the monobob Mariama Jamanka is far from medals. Laura Nolte, on the other hand, can hope for precious metal.

There are unusual pictures at these Olympic Winter Games in Beijing: It is snowing both directly in China’s capital and in the mountainous regions. The schedule will be mixed up in two disciplines on Sunday. In terms of sport, the German team did not get off to the best possible start in the second half of the Olympics. The alpine have nothing to do with the decision in the men’s giant slalom. At the Winter Games premiere of monobob, Laura Nolte is on course for bronze, but misses a better starting position. Mariama Jamanka makes a bad mistake and already has no chance.

monobob

It probably won’t be gold – but Laura Nolte is on course for a medal in the monobob. After two out of four runs, the 2016 youth Olympic champion is third in the new Olympic discipline. However, the woman from Winterberg is 1.22 seconds behind the world champion Kaillie Humphries from the USA who is in the lead. This threatens the end of the German gold series in the Yanqing ice track. Second behind Humphries is Canada’s Christine de Bruin, 1.04 seconds back. Fourth is Elana Meyers Taylor from the USA. Two-man bobsleigh Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka from Oberhof made several mistakes in the first and second run. She was 17th, 3.69 seconds behind the leader. Races three and four take place on Monday.

giant slalom

No chance: For the German alpine trio, the technical competitions started with a damper. Alexander Schmid and Linus Straßer dropped out in the first round of the giant slalom after driving errors, Julian Rauchfuss landed several seconds behind at the back of the field. The race at Xiaohaituo Mountain was marked by poor visibility due to fog and snowfall. Leading at half-time is gold favorite Marco Odermatt from Switzerland, who celebrated four World Cup victories in this discipline this winter. In second place is Stefan Brennsteiner from Austria, followed by Frenchman Mathieu Faivre.

The 15-year-old exceptional runner from Russia is listed in 26th place out of 30 starters on the list published on Sunday. Valiewa has to worry about taking part in the Olympic medal fight and has to wait for the judgment of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is announced for Monday. The agency’s disciplinary committee lifted the suspension.

Snowfall messes up schedule

Snow whirlwind: The winter weather initially had an impact on two competitions on Sunday. The slopestyle qualification of the ski freestylers had to be postponed. Actually, it should have started on Sunday at 3:00 a.m. CET. The competition will now start on Monday at the earliest. The women’s second downhill training session was completely canceled due to snowfall.
