The third to last day of competition begins with the second gold for the Chinese ski freestyler Eileen Gu. The case of unfortunate figure skater Kamila Valiyeva continues to be a topic of discussion. IOC boss Thomas Bach is satisfied with the games – in contrast to human rights activists.

Even on the day after her botched freestyle and fourth place in the figure skating competition, the case of Kamila Valiewa caused debates – both legal and emotional. China’s superstar Eileen Gu celebrates her second gold of these games on Friday. IOC President Thomas Bach draws a positive Olympic balance, the Swiss Fanny Smith is considering a protest after the ski cross drama surrounding Daniela Maier.

The overview.

Eileen Gu – the triple crowned

China’s superstar Eileen Gu has won her third medal in third competition at the Winter Olympics. After gold in big air and silver in slopestyle, the 18-year-old also came out on top in the halfpipe competition on Friday.

The American-born, who competes for hosts China, is the first freestyler to win three medals at the same Games. Germany’s only starter Sabrina Cakmakli ended up in twelfth place in the final of the twelve best athletes.

Kamila Valiewa wants to use the B sample to prove her innocence

In the Olympic doping scandal surrounding Kamila Valiyeva, the Russian figure skater wants to prove her innocence with the help of the B test. The 15-year-old will apply for the B sample to be examined because, among other things, there could have been a technical error by the Stockholm anti-doping laboratory when analyzing her doping test, explained Valiyeva’s lawyers. This emerges from the 41-page verdict for the summary proceedings in the case, which the International Court of Arbitration for Sport Cas published. In her defense, Valiyeva’s lawyers referred to the “extremely low concentration” of the heart drug trimetazidine, which is prohibited under anti-doping rules, and which had been detected in the A sample.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed sympathy for Kamila Valiyeva after her bitter Olympic final and sharply criticized the environment with the Russian figure skater’s coach Eteri Tutberidze. “When I saw how she was received by those around her, with what seemed to me like an enormous chill – it sent chills down my spine to see what was happening,” Bach reported on Friday.

There is also another doping case. According to the International Testing Agency (Ita), Ukrainian bobsledder Lidija Hunko has tested positive for a banned substance. The 28-year-old finished 20th and last in the monobob competition on Monday.

IOC President gets enthusiastic – human rights activists draw devastating balance

Bach’s view: IOC President Thomas Bach rated the Winter Games in Beijing as “very successful”. In his summary on Friday, the head of the International Olympic Committee referred to “outstanding performances by the athletes” and an “unprecedented Olympic spirit” among the participants. This is “far above what I have experienced at previous Olympic Games,” said the 68-year-old. Before the Winter Games, the award to China had been sharply criticized. The Olympic hosts are accused of human rights violations.

Human rights activists have drawn a devastating balance sheet from the Winter Olympics in Beijing. “The games were a dream for Chinese President Xi Jinping, but a nightmare for human rights,” Human Rights Watch’s Minky Worden told an online press conference with sports officials on Friday. The organization criticized human rights violations in China, such as the persecution of the Uyghur minority, intimidation of athletes, Chinese censorship and the politicization of the games.

After ski cross drama: Daniela Maier wants to challenge the jury’s decision

Protest: After the ski cross drama surrounding Daniela Maier, the Swiss Fanny Smith wants to “examine all possibilities to contest the decision” after missing her bronze medal. She shared this on Instagram. “It’s definitely the hardest day of my career. I can’t accept the jury’s decision,” wrote the World Cup runner-up. Smith finished third in the final ahead of Maier. Smith was stripped of third place after a minute-long video study. Smith’s chances of success in a protest are considered slim.

The German ski crossers clearly missed out on a good starting position for the knockout stage at the Olympic Winter Games in China. Florian Wilmsmann, Tobias Müller, Daniel Bohnacker and Niklas Bachsleitner all ended up outside the top 15 on Friday. In the round of 16, the DSV athletes are therefore expected to face stronger opponents. The best two of the round of sixteen races advance one round.

Two-man bobsleigh Olympic champion Francesco Friedrich set the second-best time behind Johannes Lochner in the final training session in the large sled. The record world champion was still tinkering beforehand and completed a solid fifth run with his four-man bobsleigh crew on Friday without pushing at full power at the start. Lochner raced to the best time with a faster start. Friedrich and Lochner skipped the sixth and final training run. Christoph Hafer left out the entire final training session.
