Olivier Véran defeated in Isère, during the second round of the legislative elections

Olivier Veran, when he was government spokesperson, speaks after a cabinet meeting at the Elysée Palace in Paris, June 28, 2023.

A figure of Macronism, the former Minister of Health and government spokesperson Olivier Véran was a candidate for re-election in the 1D constituency of Isère but was defeated on Sunday July 7th during the second round of the legislative elections. He obtained 40.24% of the votes and was defeated by the “insoumis” candidate of the New Popular Front, Hugo Prevost (42.35%). The candidate supported by the alliance of the National Rally and Eric Ciotti, Alexandre Lacroix, came third in this three-way race (17.41%).

In the first round, Mr. Véran came in second place with 33.62%, seven points behind the candidate of the united left (40, 19%), while the candidate of the extreme right was already far behind (18, 34%). This neurologist by training had announced his reconversion into aesthetic medicine, after his departure from the government spokesperson in January. He finally very quickly returned to the political arena during the early legislative elections, being reinvested by Renaissance. Olivier Véran was elected in 2012 for the first time as deputy of this constituency, encompassing part of Grenoble, under the colors of the Social Party, then re-elected in 2017 and 2022 under the colors of the presidential camp.
