Olaf Scholz: What his hesitation means for Germany’s credibility

Hesitant arms assistance, a chaotic government, and disgruntled allies. Can you still rely on the Germans in the decisive phase of the war?

You have to give Olaf Scholz one thing: he’s calm. Or at least pretend.

Monday this week. Three days ago it was leaked that Christine Lambrecht wanted to quit. Now she has officially asked the Chancellor to be dismissed. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin invited his colleagues from the NATO countries to Ramstein on Friday. At the meeting, the war in Ukraine will be discussed and further arms deliveries, especially the German Leopard tanks. It’s a bloody important meeting. It is about nothing less than the future of the western alliance.
