Olaf Scholz in the Ukraine crisis: last-minute trip for peace – politics

As the danger of war grows, Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits Kiev and the next day Moscow. The question is: in time to still prevent the invasion?

Kiev and Moscow are separated by a lot, but not a great distance. The distance is barely an hour’s flight. After Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) completed his appointments in the Ukrainian capital this Monday, he could make it to Moscow by early dinner. Scholz will not do that. He will have the flight service take him back to Berlin in order to leave for Russia very early the next day. That may not be optimal for the climate, but it serves the purpose from a diplomatic point of view. The conversation in the Kremlin is difficult enough. Host Vladimir Putin should not find any reasons to be offended, at least in terms of protocol.
