The Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has a new roommate. This baby porcupine was born on March 19th. Unfortunately, his mother did not take sufficient care of the offspring, so the little one is now being bottle-fed. The spines of the baby animal are still soft – they only become hard a few days after birth. The spines are reddish in young animals, in the wild this is used for camouflage. Normally, porcupines are at home in the rainforest in South America, the animals mainly live in trees. The baby porcupine is cared for by the keepers for another ten weeks and then comes into the enclosure with its parents.
