He was absolutely obnoxious, obsessed with sex, drugs and self-importance, a selfish gun nut, but when David Crosby sang in that angelic voice, heaven opened up. “Guinnevere”, the song that begins with Milady’s green eyes, is aimed at three women at the same time and also at the king’s daughter of the same name, who is strolling through the garden on the morning after the rain. The singer is then no longer the selfish artist, but the knight Lancelot and at the same time the troubadour who saves the saga into the present. The sadness in this song is for a friend who was killed by a car. The view goes from the garden upwards to the pitilessly circling seagulls:
