The fact that he was ill and facing the end was actually not entirely unknown. Michel Würthle had raised the issue himself often enough. Just last winter, a kind of artistic and gastronomic legacy was published by Steidl in five magnificent volumes, and some of the texts in the press on this occasion read like early obituaries.
