Gabriele Schnaut celebrated a late triumph with a riddle. It was October 2006, Kent Nagano made his debut as the new general music director of the Bavarian State Opera, set up a new production of Richard Strauss’ “Salome” and requested an audition from Wolfang Rihm. The text of “Das Gehege” was based on the finale of Botho Strauß’ “Schlusschor”, musically it was an anticipation of what was to come that evening, heavy torrents of sound, late-Romantic fullness, only slightly roughened with dissonant resistance.
