Mary Bauermeister bore the title with dignity: she was apostrophized as the “grandmother of Fluxus” when she finally arrived in the consciousness of the German art scene. But the professional recognition initially had no major resonance. The art of Mary Bauermeister, who was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1934 and grew up in Cologne, was underestimated. She was, erroneously, seen more as a networker and hostess – and as the wife of the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
