Oberschleißheim – sewage treatment plant before the collapse – district of Munich

Hundreds of liters of oil were poured into Oberschleissheim’s sewer system over the weekend. The sewage treatment plant was apparently on the verge of collapse. After hours of work, especially by the volunteer fire brigade, the situation could just be clarified, reported Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) on Tuesday evening in the local council. Neither oil has penetrated into public waters nor “major damage” is to be expected at the sewage treatment plant.

The criminal police are now investigating the background to the crime. It is currently estimated that 300 to 500 liters of oil have been illegally dumped into the sewer system, said the mayor. The entire pipe system of the sewage treatment plant is contaminated. On Saturday, when the oil was noticed, there was an acute risk “that the biological treatment systems would fail”. The sewage treatment plant would then have had to be completely rebuilt and shut down for four to six months.

The Oberschleißheim fire brigade was in intensive use for several hours with the support of the special facilities in the Munich district, including the ABC train to combat biological and chemical accidents and an oil suction device from the Taufkirchen fire brigade. According to Böck, this prevented oil from flowing into the Gänsbach, into which the sewage treatment plant discharges its purified water.

“The condition of the biology in the sewage treatment plant could be preserved quite well,” the mayor sums up after analyzing the damage on Tuesday. Immediately from the emergency call at the sewage treatment plant, he was called on Saturday to damage the waterworks, where the pumps failed and left the place without tap water for several hours.
