As expected, the Nuremberg city council has suspended the planned introduction of a 365-euro annual ticket for local public transport for cost reasons. The ticket will therefore not be introduced on January 1, 2023 as originally planned. The city parliament decided on Wednesday with a large majority. Instead, it was agreed to put together a package for more attractiveness in local transport, which is to be adopted before the end of this year.
The ticket would result in annual revenue losses of 23.6 million euros. The state audit office had attested to the city that this could not be done. The Bavarian Ministry of Transport was also skeptical about the 365-euro ticket for everyone from the start and did not want to contribute to the financing.
In the six Bavarian metropolitan areas around Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Augsburg, Ingolstadt and in the Mainfranken network, only schoolchildren and trainees now travel for one euro a day. According to preliminary data, this cost the six transport associations last year around 90 million euros. The Free State took on two-thirds of this, and the municipalities had to compensate for the rest.
The initiative, which launched the project in Nuremberg with a citizens’ initiative about two years ago, does not want to accept a possible end for the 365-euro ticket. She is now collecting signatures again for a new citizens’ initiative.
