Number of unemployed in Germany is increasing – but less than usual – economy

In Germany, around 2.6 million people are currently unemployed, which results in a rate of 5.7 percent. In January, the statisticians usually record a higher increase.

The number of unemployed in Germany rose in January. According to the Federal Employment Agency (BA), 2.616 million people were without a job, 162,000 more than in December and 154,000 more than in January 2022.

“The job market remained stable at the beginning of the year,” said BA boss Andrea Nahles. “However, the effects of the geopolitical and economic uncertainties are still evident.” The unemployment rate climbed 0.3 points to 5.7 percent.

The increase was somewhat lower than usual in January in the past. Adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, the number of unemployed fell by 15,000 to 2.498 million, according to the BA. The seasonally adjusted rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent.

According to the Federal Agency, 764,000 vacancies were reported, 27,000 fewer than a year ago. According to the statisticians, the demand for labor has decreased slightly, but even increased slightly after seasonal adjustment and remained stable overall at a comparatively high level. The cut-off date for the labor market data collected was January 12th.
