Lionel Messi is one of the best footballers of his time. When asked about his best teammate, Thierry Henry sees someone else up front.
Former star striker Thierry Henry has betrayed his best teammate – and did not name the six-time Ballon d’Or winner and ex-Barca team-mate Lionel Messi.
at CBS Sports When asked about it, the 44-year-old replied: “Dennis Bergkamp.” When presenter Kate Abdo asked again whether it wasn’t Messi after all, Henry confirmed his statement again.
Already in an interview with The Independent Henry had raved about his longtime Arsenal teammate. “I’ve always said that he remains the best team-mate I’ve ever had. He’s every striker’s dream,” said the Belgian national team’s assistant at the time.
Henry raves about Bergkamp: “Always did what the game asked of him”
In 2015, Henry established in a Q&A Facebook his choice of the Dutch ex-striker as follows: “Because of his longevity and because I’ve seen him training every day for seven years.” Bergkamp always did “what the game asked of him”.
“I admired the way Dennis always tried to respect the game, even though he could do other things. He could score goals, but he could also pass and wait for the right moment,” said Henry, who is now 52 years old.
Henry and Bergkamp ran for the Gunners between 1999 and 2006. While Bergkamp then ended his career, Henry moved to FC Barcelona a year later.
There he met Messi, with whom he played for three years. Together they won the Champions League in 2009.
