Non-fiction book: “Democracy without laws” by CL Skach – Culture

The lawyer CL Skach advocates a society with as few rules as possible; citizens should negotiate how they want to live together. The idea is not new – but still dangerous.

It is a remote little volcanic island, a place of sensual beauty surrounded by a coral reef. The scent of baobab fruit and ylang-ylang is in the air, mingling with the salty spray of the Pacific Ocean, which is mild and rich in fish between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique in eastern Africa. The American CL (Cindy Lynn) Skach, professor of political and legal theory in Bologna, Italy, with teaching experience also at Oxford and Harvard, usually moves in a different setting, she goes in and out of government headquarters around the world and has worked for the United Nations worked, advised constituent assemblies. But it is this volcanic island that she chooses to illustrate “why rules are part of the problem,” as she writes.
