“Science is not the enemy of the planet”, faced with the temptations of “returning to nature”, maintains the academic. In an interview with AFP ahead of the presentation of his Nobel Prize on Saturday in Stockholm, the specialist in quantum physics explained that he wanted to use his award as a “megaphone” in “favor of science”.
“If you don’t understand the science, you can’t solve the problem”
“I try to use it in favor of science, to explain for example that science is not the enemy of the planet but on the contrary that the concern to save the planet is by doing science and relying on science they will get there,” said the 75-year-old professor. “I think it’s the fault of what people do with science. Not science itself. If you don’t understand the science, you can’t solve the problem,” he continued.
A speech which, according to him, forgets “that before the progress of science, before the invention of antibiotics, of machines to alleviate the pain of men, the situation of humanity was much more miserable than today” .
