After a police operation in early May on the Mannheim market square, it seems clear: the 47-year-old who died did not die of natural causes. That’s what an appraisal says.
The public prosecutor had commissioned the report. According to a preliminary assessment, there was a “non-natural death as a result of the police operation” in downtown Mannheim at the beginning of May.
The 47-year-old is said to have died of a “position and fixation-related respiratory disability” and the resulting “metabolic derailment” and “suffocation due to bleeding in the upper respiratory tract”. According to the autopsy, the man suffered from heart failure.
Opinion: Not a natural death
The investigations into the two police officers involved in the operation at the market place are further advanced. According to the public prosecutor’s office, around 70 witnesses were heard. The investigators also viewed around 120 videos. These can be used to essentially understand what happened.

The 47-year-old man collapsed during a police check. The emergency services and a doctor from the Central Institute for Mental Health (ZI) in Mannheim took care of the patient on site at the Mannheim market square. They had previously searched for him. The man later died in hospital. Videos then circulated on social media showing how an officer acted against the man, after which he collapsed.

The public prosecutor’s office in Mannheim is now evaluating the results of the investigations by the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office, the evidence and the report. It will be checked whether further investigation is necessary. It is not yet possible to predict when the extensive investigations will be completed. The presumption of innocence continues to apply, according to the public prosecutor.
