No distribution of harmful products in the surroundings, the danger for the population averted
Following the fire, a press conference is organized this Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Hôtel de la Préfecture in Strasbourg, in the presence of Mathieu Duhamel, secretary general of the prefecture of Bas-RhinThierry Rogelet, sub-prefect of the district of Molsheim, Colonel Bruno Cesca, Deputy Departmental Director of STIS Bas-Rhin, and Marc Schott, director of Safran.
The first incident of this magnitude
It is the “first incident of this magnitude on site”, explains Marc Schott. He specifies that the incident took place in a surface treatment operating building, with chemicals and acids which protect metals. A building considered “as the most sensitive of the site”.
“The company is preparing and training for this type of incident,” adds the director. Last November, the firefighters also carried out an exercise.
Mathieu Duhamel, secretary general of the prefecture of 67, explains that they will not talk about the causes of the fire during this conference, because an investigation is underway.
No diffusion of harmful products around
A team of specialists, 25 firefighters, trained in chemical risks, intervened. In all, in the department, there are 160 to be trained in this and are based in Strasbourg at the West barracks. Colleagues from Haut-Rhin came as reinforcements for the chemical risk.
The fire broke out at 12:28 a.m. in building 55, the most sensitive on the site, where there is a chrome plating bath.
From the first hour of intervention, the firefighters were 83 and had 45 devices to fight the fire and limit the risk of spread.
There was no distribution of harmful products in the surrounding area, the danger for the population has been eliminated. The fire was extinguished at 4:30 a.m.
The company must now assess the damage and clean up. It launched its business continuity plan. Acids stored in the building are used to protect metals in the manufacture of equipment such as landing gear.
