The new Renault Kangoo not only has technical twins with the Mercedes Citan and the upcoming EQT. If you don’t want a star or a rhombus on the hood, you can now climb into the Nissan Townstar. From the summer, the Kangoo twin will even be available electrically.

From now on, a German-French-Japanese triple pack is going to catch customers. After the Renault Kangoo was already followed by the Mercedes Citan, which will be accompanied by an electric version with the star in the form of the EQT, Nissan is now also bringing out its commercial family offshoot. Under the name Townstar, however, the variable high-roof station wagon as a debut work under the Nissan label will not have it easy. Renault sets the pace with its well-known Kangoo and the Mercedes Citan also only has a moderate reputation after its ambivalent first edition; but at least a predecessor and a significant upgrade with the new generation.

After many thought that Nissan would completely withdraw from the European market, a high-roof station wagon follows under its own flag. Like so many competitors in this segment, Nissan primarily relies on the van variant after most family customers have fled to the SUV camp. Those who stayed opt for the family truck Townstar station wagon. The electric Nissan Townstar, which will be available to customers in summer, should be of particular interest to many. It is driven on the front axle by a 90 kW / 122 hp / 245 Nm electric motor, which, with its 45 kWh battery, has a range of 300 kilometers, which is quite manageable. With the almost 4.50 meter long Townstar, Nissan is introducing CCS charging technology for the first time, which the Stromer can only use to refuel with a moderate 80 kilowatt charging capacity at direct current fast charging stations. For charging with alternating current, the customer has the usual choice of 11 or 22 kilowatts.

However, the combustion engine version of the Nissan Townstar has to be fixed by the summer. The family transporter is currently powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 96 kW / 130 hp / 240 Nm and consumes 7.7 liters of Super per 100 kilometers. The sister model Renault Kangoo is not only available with the 130 hp petrol engine, but also with a 100 hp entry-level variant and a 95 hp diesel, which are also conceivable for the Nissan. The Nissan Townstar is available as a panel van or high-roof station wagon at prices starting at 22,900 euros. The five-seat Townstar offers the most legroom, shoulder and elbow room in its segment. The driver’s and passenger’s door can be opened up to almost 90 degrees; practical sliding doors, however, only allow easy access to the rear seats when driven manually. The luggage compartment volume can be expanded from 775 to up to 3,500 liters in just a few simple steps. In addition, there are various storage compartments with a total volume of almost 50 liters in the area of the front and rear seats. The maximum loading length is 1.80 meters. “The new Townstar underscores our commitment to business and private customers alike and helps them to effectively master the challenges of daily business and private life,” says Emmanuelle Serazin, Director LCV and Corporate Sales at Nissan Europe, “We are delighted to have our customers to be able to offer a versatile range with the new Townstar.”
