Nico Fried on Olaf Scholz and the World Cup in Qatar

A difficult situation for Chancellor Olaf Scholz: While Germany is hoping for gas, Qatar is hoping for an image boost from the World Cup.

The funniest thing was when Germany didn’t win. That was in 2002 when Edmund Stoiber ran for chancellorship. Stoiber flew to the final of the soccer World Cup, which the national team lost to Brazil in Yokohama, Japan. On his return he was asked for his comments at the airport in Frankfurt. And it went like this: “If you have a trio up front like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and, uh, and the other Brazilians, Roberto Carlos, that’s, uh, that’s, uh, Rivaldo on top of that, Rivaldo, uh, uh, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, so losing that is bitter, but not that bitter.”
