Nice is setting up an SMS alert system to warn residents in the event of a major crisis

For the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, the feedback from the “two major crises” of 2020, the storm Alex and the coronavirus, shows the need to create a “large telephone database to instantly notify the population in case of alerts by sending a simple SMS ”.

From this Friday, the inhabitants of the metropolis of Nice will then be able to register on a “confidential” file, As the city points out, to receive an SMS or a call in the event of major crises. “The purpose of this file is to reach a large number of citizens very quickly so that they can take refuge in the face of imminent risks,” wrote the town hall in a press release. As risks, the metropolis gives for example natural disasters such as storms but also fires or attacks.

Initially, the alerts will only concern the French Riviera capital before the system is deployed to the entire metropolitan territory. “This completely free tool will potentially reduce the risks incurred by the population living or moving regularly in Nice”, indicates the metropolis. Other cities in France have already developed a similar system after important events, such as Rouen and the fire at the Lubrizol factory.
